This cocktail is “forbidden” due to the addition of its forbidden fruit—the pomegranate. In Greek history, Hades (the God of the Underworld) kidnapped Persephone, one of Zeus’ young and beautiful daughters. Hades became infatuated with Persephone when he saw her picking wildflowers in a field and desired to make his wife. The key to the story is that while in the Underworld, Persephone was tricked into eating pomegranate seeds, which bound her to Hades’ kingdom for a certain portion of the year. Zeus, Persephone’s father, agreed to the union, although he knew that Persephone’s mother would not agree to the marriage. Persephone’s mother, Demeter, the goddess of the earth, became distraught over her daughter’s abduction and withered the earth during the time of year Persephone was held captive. According to Greek lore, this is where our seasons come from—Persephone’s kidnapping and eating of the forbidden fruit.
